I am deeply cut to learn the death of my personal favorite F1 driver, Niki Lauda.

Long before the movie Rush, I remember catching a documentary about Lauda (I think it was on speed channel), and learning of his cold, calculated methods of driving. I appreciated just how smart he was, and how he always seemed like an underdog loner even when he was on top. Attributes that firmly placed him above the likes of Senna and Schumacher in my book.

Kinja'd!!!

I of course was born far after Lauda’s heyday, but watching old race reruns on YouTube still filled me with joy and entertainment, and then of course Rush, which was a blast to see in theaters.

I’m going to miss Lauda. I haven’t felt this down about a driver since Earnhardt’s death in 2001.

Auf Wiedersehn, Herr Lauda.

He will be missed. A great driver and an honorable man.

On a side note, notice the duct tape over the Marlboro patches. Do you know what that patch is on his left shoulder, above the Marlboro?

Big f an from back in the day. I only attended one F1 race, Long Beach in 1982, where he won and my other hero, Gilles Villeneuve, had a podium finish. I still have all of Lauda’s books in storage somewhere as well as a model of his Ferrari 312T2.

Now he can meet James Hunt again to finish the fights.

I think some Puritan edited out the “Marlboro” on that photo. I couldn’t imagine them taping over cigarette companies back when he raced. The patch above it is Raiffeisen Bank.

Thanks. The photo was definitely colorized. As for Raiffeisen, I knew I’d seen it somewhere. It’s all over the boards at the IIHF tournament.

Logged on only to say this hurts. This one cuts very close. Lost a good friend two years ago and we debated Lauda v Senna v Fangio endlessly. Not many heroes left sadly.

That said, what a life and what a man.  Rest in peace.
